Star Wars: Diego Luna Will Star in a Rogue One Prequel Series

This new content will be joined by other Disney and Marvel films and series, which the company hopes will give it an edge over its rivals.

That includes new spin-off shows from movies like Star Wars: Rogue One, which will see the return of Diego Luna's character from that film, Cassian Andor, headline a standalone TV show.

Disney already has a number of original series and movies in production that will skip television and theatrical distribution and go right to the streaming service.

In my humble opinion, "Rogue One" was the best Star Wars since the original Star Wars, and today comes news that Disney will be revisiting characters from "Rogue One" on their soon to be launched streaming service. "I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey".

Luna said in a statement that the format would be a chance to "explore this character more deeply".

The launch of this streaming platform will also affect the offerings on other streaming services as Disney pulls its content from platforms like Netflix. No release date was announced.

Disney+ is scheduled to launch in the United States in January 2019, though no projected timeframe has been given for the service's arrival in other territories.

The app itself will be organized by those brands, CEO Bob Iger said Thursday during a call to discuss the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, which will let subscribers browse within Star Wars before moving over to Pixar options, for example.

Disney has yet to announce the price of the new streaming service, though Iger commented on it earlier this year.

Shares of Disney, which have gained almost eight per cent this year, rose 1.7 per cent in after-hours trading to £90 ($118). Lucasfilm is now in development of a second live-action Star Wars Series for Disney +, the new direct to consumer streaming service of the company. Tom Hiddleston will be returning to the MCU to play Loki on the Disney+ show.

Disney+ is one of several efforts from the media giant to compete with Netflix and other streaming services in the direct-to-consumer, internet-delivered video market, bypassing traditional distributors that now provide billions of dollars in revenue to the company. Disney's successful acquisition of 21st Century Fox adds another expansive trove of movies and TV shows including channels like FX Networks, not to mention the company's own library of Disney Channel shows and its lineup of Pixar movies.
