Melbourne knifeman shot dead after killing one person, injuring two others

The suspect died later at a hospital.

Police were called to an incident in Bourke Street, in the heart of Melbourne, after reports of smoke and a auto in flames at 4:20 p.m. local time.

Melburnians have praised the bravery of police and Trolley Man as they come to terms with yet another horrific incident on Bourke Street.

"He got out of the vehicle, engaged with some members of the public at that location".

It is not yet clear whether he deliberately set the vehicle on fire but Mr Ashton said it had been laden with gas cylinders. However, police said they are unsure how the fire began. At that time other police were starting to arrive.

After taking several swings at one of the officers, the attacker was shot in the chest.

He died later in hospital.

"There is no known link to terrorism at this stage", Clayton added.

Police warned people to avoid the area, but said they "are not looking for anyone further at this early stage".

"There is some minor offending history in relation to cannabis use, theft and driving offences", he said.

EARLIER: A SERIES of explosions have been heard near Bourke Street this afternoon as police lock down the city.

A witness, Markel Villasin, told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio: "Bystanders were yelling out "just shoot him, just shoot him".

"He was breathing and he was bleeding out".

Police said they were responding to a call reporting a auto on fire in Melbourne's business district but a man waving a knife confronted them when they reached the spot.

Police shot the man in the chest after he charged at them with the knife.

Police have said they believe the attacker acted alone and they are not searching for other suspects.

"For operational matters we now have the counter-terrorism command and the homicide squad dealing with this matter, and there are ongoing investigations being conducted by the counter-terrorism command", he continued.

State Premier Daniel Andrews described the attack as "evil" but said the city would not be bowed.

Melbourne's anti-terror sirens and loudspeakers are being used for the first time, sounding out across Bourke Street.

"On behalf of all Victorians, we extend our thoughts and prayers to those who are injured and we extend our deepest, deepest sympathies to family of the deceased person".
