Active shooter reported at Topsail High School in North Carolina

A county official says reports of an active shooter at a school in North Carolina on Friday turned out to be malfunctioning water heater.

According to the school website, school begins at 8:30 a.m.

There were no injuries as of 7:03 a.m., Pender County Sheriff's Capt. James Rowell told WWAY.

Police are responding to reports of an active shooter at a North Carolina high school.

Pender County Emergency Director Tom Collins said that the malfunctioning pice of equipment could possibly be responsible for the noise.

The commissioner, identified as George Brown, said the noise that sounded like gunfire may have been a piece of equipment at the school that has been malfunctioning in recent days.

All schools in eastern Pender County were placed on lockdown. "All staff at Topsail Elementary, Topsail Middle, and Topsail High please report to Lowe's Foods", she wrote.

In a news release, schools spokeswoman Miranda Ferguson wrote that buses were being rerouted.

Live footage shows numerous law enforcement agencies now at the school where the scene remains active.

Authorities were alerted around 6:30 a.m., according to ABC11, The News & Observer's media partner.

Hampstead is about 20 miles north of the city of Wilmington. All other schools have returned to normal operations.
