Early risers are less likely to develop breast cancer, study claims

Women who begin their day early are likely to have a lower of risk breast cancer, than late beginners, suggests a research.

Lead scientist Dr Rebecca Richmond, from the University of Bristol, said: "Using genetic variants associated with people's preference for morning or evening, sleep duration and insomnia. we investigated whether these sleep traits have a causal contribution to the risk of developing breast cancer".

This echoes previous studies which found night-shift workers and those exposed to more artificial light at night are at greater risk of cancer.

Researchers said people were genetically predisposed to being either "larks", who tend to get up and go to bed early, or "owls", whose body clocks tend to make them feel drowsy in the morning and energetic in the evening.

Analysis of data obtained from the UK Biobank women (2,740 new cases of breast cancer and 149,064 controls), found similar results; morning preference reduced the risk of breast cancer by 48 per cent. The variation is due to technical differences, stated Richmond. Also, the findings can not be applied across populations as the majority of women included were of European ancestry. Does the body clock affect hormone levels to alter cancer risk, or the immune system, or metabolism?

In that time it showed two in 100 owls developed breast cancer compared with one in 100 larks.

Women who love the early hours of the day are less likely to develop breast cancer, a new study suggests.

"We know already that night shift work is associated with worse mental and physical health".

Richmond's team conducted their genetic analysis in hope of digging into possible causes and consequences of this link.

So will a good night's sleep stop me getting cancer?

The study has yet to be published in a medical journal.

Mariam Hamad Al Nuaimi, General Manager of Qatar Cancer society said: "We truly value our partnership with Careem Qatar and the efforts set towards reaching out to their passengers to raise the awareness of the dangers of Breast Cancer".

Those that were found to have the genes of a morning person had a lower chance of getting breast cancer.

Dipender Gill, of Imperial College London, said: "Although informative and interesting, this study alone does not warrant any action other than further investigation - people should not be changing their sleep patterns based on the evidence presented here".

Results from 228,951 women enrolled in an global genetic study conducted by the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC) were also included in the analysis.
