'Complete meltdown': What will happen if Donald Trump shocks in the midterms

While Trump is not on the ballot, the most polarizing USA president for decades has put himself at the center of every issue.

Americans would elect 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats, 36 governors' posts and seats in state legislatures across the country in the mid-term polls.

Wolf, who has been meeting with Democrats in key swing states in recent months, explained that the Democrats have an advantageous path to a House majority, but the path in the Senate is "incredibly tough".

CNN senior writer and political analyst Harry Enten published his final forecast Tuesday morning, in which he predicts Democrats to pick up 32 seats in the House and Republicans to gain a seat in the Senate.

Either way, election watchers who want to see which party wins control of Congress probably won't be going to bed early tonight.

The tax law has been particularly problematic for Republicans in New Jersey, where four of five GOP-held seats were being seriously contested.

The entire House of Representatives and a third of the Senate are up for grabs.

Trump, though, nearly assuredly will face an avalanche of investigations into his tax returns, his payments to adult-film star Stormy Daniels and his relationship with Russian Federation if Democrats win back the House - which comes with the much-coveted power to subpoena and launch congressional investigations.

Trump has boasted about the economy and hammered away at illegal immigration in the closing days of the campaign as he seeks to hold onto a majority in Congress and push his legislative agenda.

"Win, win, win!": President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally. In many cases they're running against career politicians. So another reason we need not be concerned about surprises in today's vote is that it was the idiosyncrasies of the USA presidential election system that turned a marginal error into a surprise president in 2016, and this system does not apply to the midterms. "That is an invasion of our country". Polling experts FiveThirtyEight now project that there is an 86% chance - or six in seven - that Trump will lose control of the House. Democrats also could flip several congressional seats in the state.

James Milner blasted Liverpool team-mates during Arsenal draw, says Klopp
And it appears he's also playing an important role in the dressing room, especially during Saturday's game against Arsenal. "We knew we would not lose this game because we were so good and showed that character again".

The party of a first-term president tends to lose congressional seats in off-year elections. "You vote, you might save a life". When you participate in the political process, you can be a check on bad behavior.

Their votes are crucial to Democratic hopes to retake the Senate and sweep to victory in the House.

"In a certain way, I am on the ballot", Trump said in a conference call Monday with his supporters. Democrats were buoyed by a wave of Republican retirements and an overwhelming fundraising advantage.

But Brookings Institution expert John Hudak said it is also clear that Trump is a major issue for both parties this year. But Pelosi brushed off such comparisons Tuesday, arguing that Clinton won the popular vote, and was handicapped by the Electoral College, which won't be a factor in House races.

"The big picture is that midterm elections go against the president's party", noted John Fortier of the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington.

FILE - People stand cast their ballots ahead of the November 6 election at Jim Miller Park, in Marietta, Ga., Oct. 27, 2018. The news since then probably reinforced these views - in particular, the president's renegotiation of the Nafta treaty, which fulfills one of his promises to this group, and his opposition to the caravan of Central American migrants, which reinforces another.

"The message that I'm going to send is: We're not okay with the direction that this president is leading our country", said Rory Mabin, a 34-year-old Chicago resident who votes in every midterm election.

Historically, though, Republicans are more reliable voters in midterm elections. Candidates and their supporters are using the downtime to phone bank voters who still haven't voted and walk as many neighborhoods as possible.

If the Democrats come up short they face another cycle shut out of power. Either of the latter two scenarios would be problematic for Trump, immediately putting a damper on his agenda.
