China's Xi criticizes 'law of jungle' in veiled swipe at Trump

President Xi Jinping on Monday pledged to widen access to China´s economy, while delivering a veiled rebuke to Trumpism, as he kicked off an import fair amid growing foreign accusations his government was backtracking on grand reform promises.

"We will take further steps to lower tariffs, facilitate customs clearance, reduce institutional costs in import", Mr Xi said during a speech at the expo.

As China has been lambasted for stealing technology rather than developing it independently, Xi also committed to implementing measures to protect intellectual property rights.

Without naming the United States, Xi said that the global free trade system was "under attack".

In a speech at Davos almost two years ago, he presented China as a beacon of globalisation, in a counterpoint to Trump.

"China will not close its door to the world and will only become more and more open", China President Xi Jinping said while throwing open the China International Import Expo in Shanghai.

Xi made no mention of Beijing's fight with Mr. Trump over Chinese plans for state-led development of technology industries.

The European Union, which shares US concerns over China's trade practices if not Trump's tariff strategy to address them, on Thursday called for China to take concrete steps to further open its market to foreign firms and provide a level playing field, adding that it would not sign up to any political statement at the forum.

"It is our honest commitment to open the Chinese market", Xi said in an address opening the event in Shanghai. With India's exports of $13.33 billion, the trade balance is highly in favor of China.

"As globalization deepens, the practices of law of jungle and victor take all are a dead end", Xi told the gathering in Shanghai, which featured more than 3,600 companies from 172 countries, regions and organizations.

"40 years ago China started to build its bridge to the world by opening its economy and kick-starting reforms that have changed the lives and prospects of hundreds of millions of people here but also beyond China". No senior USA officials were set to attend the Shanghai event.

Ma, the billionaire owner of China's largest online shopping portal, made the headline-grabbing job-creation promise to Trump previous year, when Beijing was still courting the then-newly elected president.

Twelve countries were named "guests of honour" at the trade fair, including the UK, Russia, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Vietnam. Of G-20 countries, only Russian Federation is sending a head of state or government. The Swiss government said in a statement on Sunday that his visit had never been confirmed.

A House controlled by Democrats may even push for a further escalation of a trade war with Beijing, according to experts.

A handful of countries are being represented by a single exhibitor selling one product. Iran, saffron. Jamaica will be marketing its famed blue mountain coffee and Chad is selling bauxite.
