Government announces clampdown as violence against NHS staff becomes a

Chancellor Philip Hammond has confirmed the planned funding boost for the NHS and announced an additional emergency cash injection for social services in his Autumn budget, but critics argue it will not be enough to weather the storm of increasing demand, inefficient service delivery and a workforce crisis.

Rachel Power, chief executive of the Patients Association, said the chancellor had "produced a Budget that tells patients nothing".

A new 24/7 crisis hotline, more mental health crisis ambulances and children and young people's crisis teams across the country were all announced as part of a £2bn increase in mental health funding.

"The allocated money for mental health sends the right message about the importance of ensuring parity with physical health services". To bring that about we need to see radical changes to the way government prioritises mental health and the ways in which public services of all kinds relate to people with mental health difficulties. The Chancellor also said that local authorities in England will receive a further £650 million in social care funding in 2019.

There was also a £45m commitment for disabled facilities, and a total of £650m promised for social care across the UK. "This is most welcome, but it can not succeed without recognising the interdependency of these services on public health and social care". These issues all remain unresolved while the budget for them is squeezed.

Humans to blame as 60% of world's wildlife is lost
While climate change plays a role in the loss of biodiversity, the report says the bigger culprit is runaway human consumption. The report warns that wildlife is not just "nice to have" for humans.

Victims will also be given prompt mental health support, he will add. We will need the forthcoming review of NHS capital spending to set out how trusts can fund big building projects in the future. "This will rightly be ambitious, but it must also be realistic about what the service can be expected to deliver, given the competing priorities for resources, the steep and relentless rise in demand for care and the current financial and performance gaps the NHS now has".

"This should have been a budget for the NHS to celebrate extra money after a decade of austerity, and make no mistake the confirmation of that money is welcome".

The announcement will be welcomed by local councils, who are receiving more than 5,000 requests relating to adult social care every day. What we needed was support to get the system back on its feet but what we have is yet another sticking plaster.

By 2022 we will have around £35 to 40 million less per year.

"Therefore, we hope that the closer working links between the NHS, police and the CPS described by the Secretary of State today will help directly address this situation, ideally with the Ministry of Justice directing courts to be much tougher when sentencing those found guilty of assaulting and threatening our staff, prosecuting those people to the full extent of the law and actually imposing custodial sentences upon them".
