In a complaint filed to the association after Sarkar's teaser was out, Varun Rajendran claimed that Murugadoss had copied the script of Sengol, and requested the association to investigate.

Sarkar has suffered a serious setback, as the South Indian Film Writers' Association (SIFW) has declared that the story of assistant director Varun's Sengol is similar to Vijay's Sarkar. Bankrolled by Kalanidhi Maran under his banner Sun Pictures, Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman is scoring music for this magnum opus with lyricist Vivek penning the lyrics, Girish Gangadharan wielding the camera and A Sreekar Prasad editing it.

With Sarkar slated to release this Diwali, the Madras High Court will be hearing the plagiarism case on October 30, this Tuesday. It is not the first time that the director has been accused of plagiarism. A lot of expectations are riding on the film as it marks the third collaboration between AR Murugadoss and Vijay, after "Thuppakki" and "Kaththi". The acclaimed director faced a similar situation during the release of Kaththi.
