National Drug Takeback Day Set For Saturday

A growing problem across the United States has the potential to surface for every American. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.

Local agencies are partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration to provide a venue for citizens to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs.

This Saturday, October 27, from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m., the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 16th opportunity in eight years to prevent overdose deaths and drug addictions before they start by ridding their homes of potentially unsafe, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs, announced U.S. Attorney for the District of Idaho Bart M. Davis.

Almost half of the 80 Arizona locations will be located within the Phoenix area.

Saturday, Oct. 27, is the latest Take-Back Day, according to the program's sponsor, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

More than 6 million Americans misused prescription drugs in 2016, according to data found by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

"DEA's National Drug Take-Back Days are important opportunities for people to turn in unwanted and potentially addictive drugs with no questions asked", Attorney General Jeff Sessions explained in an agency news release.

Nationally, almost a million pounds of drugs were turned in to more than 5,800 locations.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is held twice a year, in April and October.
