Hamilton: Red Bull are 'out of reach'

Daniel Ricciardo denied team-mate Max Verstappen his first Formula One pole position as Red Bull claimed a one-two at the Mexican Grand Prix, where Lewis Hamilton is set to clinch the title on Sunday.

Ricciardo prevented Verstappen from becoming the youngest pole victor in Formula 1 history with a lap out of the blue right at the end of the session. "Hopefully we're in a quicker auto all day".

And Red Bull chief Christian Horner is hoping the two drivers can maintain their performance levels for the race.

Valtteri Bottas was fifth for Mercedes ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton, though, was thrilled to be so high up after Mercedes struggled badly in the hotter conditions of Friday practice, when he was only seventh fastest. I'm really, relay happy.

"Hopefully we're the quicker vehicle all day".

"Daniel did the better job in Q3 and deserves the pole".

If he has a clean race, it is hard to see how the Brit can not clinch the title from that starting position.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who must win here to stand any chance of stopping Hamilton from claiming this year's honours, finished behind his rival in fourth. "Being behind the Red Bulls is not a bad thing".

Ricciardo, who moves to Renault in 2019, opened his radio channel to let out a roar of delight after being told he had claimed pole.

"I knew the pace was there, it was just a matter of putting it together".

"Max had the same vehicle and same opportunity, Daniel did the better job in Q3 and deserves the pole", he said. "It's been well executed, we just need to convert it [into a win]".

"I still wasn't convinced, it wasn't the cleanest (lap), but once I heard I got pole I got to relax a little", added the Australian, who is leaving Red Bull for Renault at the end of the year.

Verstappen said his auto didn't feel right despite fast times in Saturday morning practice and the early stages of qualifying.

"The whole qualifying was c***", Verstappen said. "It was the same problems from P2, the engine braking not how I want to, rear-locking the auto". I tried to make the best of it.

Verstappen continued: "So we couldn't do anything throughout qualifying, so I just had to lock a lot of tools, go forward on the brake balance to try and stabilise the whole auto".

The 1-2 start will be the first for Red Bull since the start of the hybrid engine era in 2014. Once you get going, tire wear has been significant this weekend so if you're a quicker auto, you can still overtake.
