Devastation Caused by Super Typhoon Yutu in Saipan

According to the Weather Channel, the eye of the storm has now pushed west of islands in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, about 120 miles northeast of Guam.

A Homeland Security and Emergency Management officer in CNMI, Nadine Deleon Guerrero, said initial reports indicated Yutu had left a level of infrastructure damage not seen before in the CNMI.

The Saipan Tribune, quoting the governor's office, said a 44-year-old woman was killed when a building collapsed on Saipan during the height of the storm. He said Thursday that there were reports of injuries and that people were waiting to be treated at a hospital on the territory's largest and most populated island, Saipan. Many homes have been destroyed.

"This damage is just horrendous".

"It's going to take weeks probably to get electricity back to everybody", he said. A few gas stations ran out of gas by Tuesday evening, he said. "There are no leaves".

The storm's eye crossed directly over the island of Tinian, while its outer edge scraped Saipan, meaning both islands felt the brunt of Yutu's fury. "My concrete walls were literally shaking'".

More than 800 people were in shelters across the territory, and space was running out, officials said. Cellphone coverage was spotty.

Military personnel were standing by to coordinate support for the Federal Emergency Management Agency-led recovery effort, he added. Weather officials in Taiwan are also monitoring the storm.
