Israel's Netanyahu makes surprise, unpublicized visit to Oman

"History and experience have proved that surrendering to the illegitimate demands of the United States and the Israeli regime will further embolden them to exert pressure and advance their agenda in the region and to ignore the inalienable rights of the Palestinian nation", he further said.

TEL AVIV-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a surprise visit to meet Oman's ruler this week to discuss regional issues, the first official summit between the leaders and a sign of improving relations between Israel and the Arab Gulf states. The last was in 1996, when Shimon Peres visited. He was accompanied by his wife, Sara, and several senior Israeli officials including the head of the country's spy agency, Yossi.

According to the same statement, the visit comes at the sultan's invitation.

The meeting was agreed upon after lengthy negotiations between the two countries and kept secret until Netanyahu and his wife returned to Israel on Friday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Sultan Qaboos of Oman have met in Muscat, marking a major elevation in ties between the discreet Gulf state and Israel.
