Oculus Disputes Reports that Rift 2 Has Been Canceled

The latest hit comes from Oculus co-founder and former CEO Brendan Iribe, who announced he is leaving Facebook.

The shakeup in Facebook at senior levels continue with the latest announcement by Brendan Iribe that he is leaving Oculus, the company and project he headed for almost six years. And WhatsApp founder Jan Koum and Brian Acton (who has publicly bashed Facebook) have also left in the previous year.

Although his farewell post on Facebook was mostly positive and a celebration of the work accomplished by the Oculus team it specifically mentions the Rift and Touch with no mention of the Go or less-expensive mass-market VR products. TechCrunch sources said the Facebook exec team had "fundamentally different views on the future of Oculus that grew deeper over time", and that Iribe felt it had become a "race to the bottom".

"WhatsApp's co-founders launched a public feud with Facebook's management after they left beginning in September 2017, as one tweeted "#deletefacebook" and a Facebook executive fired back calling the criticism "low-class". A Facebook spokesperson tells TechCrunch that PC VR is part of the company's future product roadmap and that much of what Iribe's team has been working on will be manifested in future products.

Rumors point to Iribe disagreeing with Oculus' future vision, but the company did stress to GameDaily, "PC VR is still a category we are investing in".

Oculus was founded in 2012 by Iribe, Palmer Luckey, Nate Mitchell and Michael Antonov in 2012.

But the exit of a series of people at the top from Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and now Oculus can not be put down as a mere coincidence.

Iribe announced his resignation in a Facebook post on Monday.

"At some point the departure can occur for a whole bunch of reasons and if they're just frustrated with the corporate politics in general that could happen anywhere", said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group. Now, Iribe is moving on and leaving Oculus behind. Iribe was the chief executive of Oculus up to 2016 before he was shifted to head the company's personal computer-based VR operations.
