Khashoggi killers will be held accountable: Saudi

And yet, as the New York Times' Max Fisher noted in relation to a parallel shift happening in the United States, the killing of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has unleashed a backlash against Saudi Arabia in general - and bin Salman in particular - that neither the regime's heavy-handed domestic repression nor its acts of aggression against neighbouring Yemen and Qatar had managed to ignite.

He said he had no reason to believe that Saudi Arabia would renege on commitments to make up for any shortfall in global oil supplies as Iranian oil exports are curbed under the sanctions.

Last year's so-called Future Investment Initiative - the first of its kind - gathered some of the finance world's most influential people in a coming-out party of sorts for the kingdom's Public Investment Fund.

Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post, had gone missing since entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

The man who left, Mustafa al-Madani, was not only wearing Khashoggi's clothes, but he also had the same glasses and was sporting a fake beard. Statements from the agency said both King Salman and Prince Mohammed express their condolences for his father's death. He added that an investigating team in Turkey found evidence contradicting earlier reports that Khashoggi left the consulate after his visit October 2. He had previously appeared to accept Saudi assurances that "rogue killers" may have murdered Khashoggi.

-Oct. 6: The Post, citing anonymous Turkish officials, reports Khashoggi may have been killed in the consulate in a "preplanned murder" by a Saudi team.

-Oct. 17: Pompeo meets with Turkey's president and foreign minister in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

The adviser, who is married to Ivanka Trump, indicated the administration is mindful of US ties to Saudi Arabia and the ways it can help with Iran, which the Trump White House has perceived as a strong threat.

Erdogan and US President Donald Trump discussed Khashoggi's death in a phone call over the weekend, Anadolu reported Monday, and pledged to "shed light on all aspects" of the incident. Turkish officials suggest Khashoggi might still be in the consulate.

"One cannot help but wonder how there could have been a "fistfight" between 15 young expert fighters. and a 60-year-old Khashoggi, alone and defenseless", Yasin Aktay, a friend of Khashoggi's, wrote in the pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper.

Earlier Friday, Sanders said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had spoken to the crown prince and briefed the president and John Bolton, Trump's national security adviser.

A top German official is pressing for a joint European Union position on Saudi Arabia after Berlin backed a freeze on arms exports to the kingdom following the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi.

Turkish media reports and officials maintain that a 15-member Saudi team flew to Istanbul on Oct 2, knowing Khashoggi would arrive for a document he needed to get married. King Salman, 82, had handed the day-to-day running of Saudi Arabia to him.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency announced the calls to Khashoggi's son, Salah, early Monday morning.

"I hope those responsible for Khashoggi's killing are punished and no one ever thinks of repeating this".

For weeks, Saudi Arabia insisted the Washington Post contributor had left the consulate.
