Freed Japanese journalist says Syria kidnap ordeal was 'hell'

A Japanese journalist freed from captivity in Syria said he is happy to be going home after living in "hell" for more than three years, but is anxious about how he will catch up with a changed world.

Yasuda was kidnapped by the jihadist group known at the time as Nusra Front. In 2004, on another trip to Iraq, he was captured near Baghdad by militants, who held him for three days.

Yasuda, wearing a black T-shirt, was escorted from his plane at Tokyo's airport by Japanese officials and ushered into a black van.

Yasuda's wife said he must be allowed time to recover, and Yasuda himself - apparently struggling to speak Japanese - told Reuters en route to Istanbul his future was uncertain. "I am in safe condition. Thank you very much", a bearded Yasuda said.

"If I said that I was Japanese, or gave my real name, the other prisoners would have heard, and if they were released, they would be able to tell people the place where I was being held, They could have told the Japanese authorities, for instance, and then they'd know where my captors were keeping me".

"What he witnessed during his captivity is precious information".

A respected journalist who started his career at a local newspaper, Yasuda started reporting on the Middle East in early 2000s.

Earlier, in 2004, a Japanese high school graduate, an aid worker and a freelance photographer taken hostage in Iraq were also condemned as irresponsible after their release. In speaking to reporters, Yasuda tried to explain the circumstances that led to the unusual statements.

His father, Hideaki, said: "Above everything else I want to see that he is fine".

This undated picture released by Japan's Jiji Press news agency May 30, 2016, taken at an undisclosed location, shows Japanese freelance journalist Junpei Yasuda holding a piece of paper with a handwritten message in Japanese that says: "Please help".

His wife said he had greeted her at the airport with a shy smile. "I'm so glad he survived".

"He looks to be in good health, but our staff will check his condition and transport him to Japan as soon as possible", the foreign minister, Taro Kono, told reporters. Yasuda was freed after more than three years of captivity in Syria Wednesday.

His last work in Syria involved reporting on his friend Kenji Goto, a Japanese journalist who was taken hostage and killed by the Islamic State group.

"My name is Jumpei Yasuda, Japanese journalist".

Several videos showing a man believed to be Yasuda were released in the past year.
