Stephen Hawking's motorized wheelchair is up for auction

An online auction announced October 22, 2018, by auctioneer Christie's features 22 items from Hawking, including his doctoral thesis on the origins of the universe.

In particular, one of the five copies of the doctoral thesis on "the Properties of universes expanding" of the estimated 130 thousand to $ 195 thousand dollars.

Most of the Hawking items in the collection are part of a larger sale that includes artifacts belonging to other titans of western physics: Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, and Albert Einstein.

"...[G] iven his extensive travels to conferences and public events, as well as the scope of his intellectual explorations of space-time, this is arguably both literally and metaphorically the most-travelled wheelchair in history", notes the auction house, humorously observing that Hawking "was even renowned for being a rather wild driver".

Following the passing of the great Stephen Hawking in March, some of the physicist's possessions are up for auction at Christie's in London.

Thomas Venning, head of books and manuscripts at Christie's, said Hawking was so despondent over the diagnosis that he "gave up his studies for a time". But it's not the only kind of legacy the legendary physicist left behind, as a new auction of some of his most interesting personal effects is set to show.

The famous physicist was diagnosed at just 21 years old with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease.

On any day of the year, you could pick up Hawking's 1988 bestseller A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes for less than 20 bucks at most bookshops.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Christie's said. The copy of the thesis available for auction is signed by Hawking by hand.

Meanwhile, Hawking's wheelchairs have become a symbol for his disability.

The auction will also include the original script from one of Hawking's appearances on the animated television series, The Simpsons, and a copy of his best-selling book A Brief History of Time signed and with a thumbprint. A Book, written and corrected with handwritten annotation by Stephen Hawking is one of the personal and academic possessions.

Twenty-two lots will be up for auction between October 31 and November 8 in an online Christie's auction known as "On the Shoulders of Giants". A leather bomber jacket and a copy of the script of the 22nd season premiere of "The Simpsons", entitled "Elementary School Musical", for which Hawking lent his voice.
