Hurricane Willa Strengthens to Category 5 Storm, Aims for Mexico’s Pacific Coast

"Willa is expected to be an extremely risky major hurricane when it reaches the coast of Mexico", the NHC said in a statement.

Willa's maximum sustained winds ticked down from 160 miles per hour to 150 miles per hour, leaving the hurricane just shy of Category 5 strength.

The monster storm, which is packing 160mph winds, was upgraded to the stronget level possible on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale at 4pm BST on Monday.

When we wrote about this storm earlier today the central pressure was reported by the NHC as 931 mb, but with the intensification that was suggested having now happened and hurricane Willa reaching Category 5 strength, the pressure has dropped further to 925 mb.

The government of Mexico issued a hurricane warning from San Blas northward to Mazatlan, and a tropical storm warning from Playa Perula northward to San Blas and from north of Mazatlan to Bahia Tempehuaya.

Willa become a Category 5 hurricane late Monday morning, generating life-threatening surf and rip tide conditions.

It was projected to weaken somewhat before hitting land but was still expected to be extremely unsafe.

Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Vicente - with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour - was expected to bring "heavy rainfall and flooding" over Mexico's south and southwest. Willa will also bring strong winds and heavy rain, which could result in flash flooding and landslides.

Tropical Storm Willa is the 21st named storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season.

Willa's is the 10th major hurricane to form in the northeast Pacific Ocean this year 2018 is tied with 1992 for the second-most major hurricanes on record in this region.
