Wimbledon to introduce final set tie-breaks from 2019

At the 2010 Championships, American John Isner famously beat Frenchman Nicola Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68 in a match that lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes spread over the course of three days, The Sun reports.

The Australian Open and French Open do not yet have a deciding-set tie-break, making it possible for matches to go on indefinitely, while the US Open plays a tie-break at 6-6 as in earlier sets.

The AELTC said the rule will apply across all events at the Championships, but there would be no change to the current format of the Wheelchair and Quad Wheelchair events, which are the best of three tiebreak sets.

In a statement released on the Wimbledon website, tournament organisers said they had reviewed match data from the past 20 years of competition and had chosen to bring in tiebreaks after speaking to players and officials.

In 2010, John Isner and Nicolas Mahut played the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon.

However, until now the US Open has been the only Grand Slam that uses a tie-break in the fifth set.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced on Friday that final-set tie-breaks will be implemented at the grass-court grand slam if matches reach 12-12 in their deciders.

The rule will be universal, spanning across men and women's matches in singles, doubles and juniors. He beat eight-time champion Roger Federer 13-11 in the fifth set in the quarterfinals, and then defeated Isner 26-24 in the fifth in the semifinals - the second-longest match in the history of a tournament that began in 1877.

AELTC Chairman Philip Brook commented: "In reaching this decision, the AELTC Committee sought the feedback of both players and officials, analysed two decades of match data, and considered other factors including scheduling complexities and spectator experience. And they recognize it affects the quality of the matches on subsequent rounds". Visibly exhausted, he went on to lose the final to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
