Students accused of handing out cookies made of human ash to classmates

A California family is shocked and upset after their son came home and told them another student brought cookies to school baked with her grandmother's ashes and was passing them around.

But, Doroshov cautioned, because of the students' ages, charges weren't likely and the police were instead looking to work with the school district in favor of an equitable solution. "It's basically, under California penal code, a public nuisance".

A school resource officer at Da Vinci Charter Academy High School in Davis, California, was first alerted on October 4 to the alleged incident, in which two students distributed the cookies to nine others before the ghastly ingredient was revealed.

Doroshov said investigators believe roughly nine students consumed the cookies, which he says may have been sugar cookies.

An unidentified mother of a child at the school said, "It blew my mind". "I was really repulsed".

A schoolgirl who allegedly baked cookies with her grandmother's ashes then took them to school and shared them with her friends, it has been reported.

According to the whistleblower's mother, school officials had failed to notify her and other parents of what happened in a timely fashion and had her son submit and sign a statement addressing the incident without reaching out to her.

The boy's family agreed to speak on the condition that their identities be hidden for fear of repercussion from the Davis Joint Unified School District.

The story circulating in the media is something on which I can not comment, but let me be clear that there is no health risk at to our campus or to any one of our students.

"We take all allegations of wrongdoing seriously and we conduct thorough investigations and involve the police when appropriate", the school said in a statement. "Those who were involved are remorseful and this is now a personal family matter".

Police Lt. Paul Doroshov is baffled by the case but says no one has fallen ill.

"The evidence is based on interviews and whatnot", he said.

Several high school students are accused of using cremated remains to bake homemade cookies.

The police officer told The Sacramento Bee that it was a "good question" whether the incident could be considered a crime, and that there was an obscure penal code section over the improper disposal of human remains. I thought that she put drugs in it or something.

The students have been cooperating with the investigation, Doroshov said.

"I can say everyone is cooperating", he said. "Nobody is trying to be evasive [and] we feel we do know the accurate story".

The case, the lieutenant added, is unlike anything his agency has ever investigated.

"This is definitely a unusual occurrence, to say the least", he said.
