Dramatic Footage Shows Moment Inside Soyuz Capsule When Booster Rocket Failed

The booster rocket carrying a Soyuz spacecraft with a Russian and United States astronaut on board headed for the International Space Station failed mid-air on Thursday, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing.

According to Nasa, initial reports are that the crew landed in good condition and got in contact with the space agency.

US astronaut Nick Hague, right and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, member of the main crew of the expedition to the International Space Station (ISS), speak prior to the launch of Soyuz MS-10 space ship at the Russian leased Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018. If on the other hand a solution can be devised which allows the Station to remained crewed, it will be the kind of last-minute engineering and worldwide collaboration we rarely see outside of science fiction. To make matters worse, the three current crew members must return to Earth before the end of the year as well.

The atmosphere in the bar was jovial - essentially a reunion for the family, who had drove and flown in from across the country to watch their relative launch into space.

"We have a lot of things planned through the rest of the fall and the winter, and that's all just being reassessed right now", Sam Scimemi, NASA's director for International Space Station, told Reuters. The module lands at a steeper angle than they would in a normal landing.

Two astronauts have landed safely in Kazakhstan after being forced to abort their mission to the International Space Station today.

They were set to join the crew of Alexander Gerst, the station's first-ever German commander, as well as US astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Prokopyev. They were met by rescue teams in remote Kazakhstan more than 200 miles from their launchpad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Search and rescue crews are getting ready to reach the expected landing site. According to Space.com, helicopters have been dispactched to look for the capsule.

Flight controllers kept the three space station residents abreast of the situation after Thursday's aborted launch.

The malfunction could cause a headache for NASA.

Hague, 43, and Ovchinin, 47, lifted off as scheduled at 2:40 p.m. (0840 GMT; 4:40 a.m. EDT) Thursday from Baikonur. In a statement, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine confirmed he had been informed the two crewmembers were safe.

Gerst took the opportunity to point out that the Soyuz spacecraft is "an awesome vehicle", as it was able to save the crew after its booster failure. "A thorough investigation into the cause of the incident will be conducted".

Russia's Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft carrying the members of the International Space Station blasts off to the ISS from the launch pad at the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Baikonur on October 11, 2018. In August, a hole appeared in a Soyuz capsule already docked to the ISS that caused a brief loss of air pressure and had to be patched. Ovchinin spent six months on the International Space Station in 2016. NASA's own transportation system, the commercial crew vehicles under development by SpaceX and Boeing, have yet to take uncrewed test flights to the station, and those are unlikely to occur before early 2019.
