US Senate heads to final vote on Kavanaugh nomination

McConnell said in an interview Saturday with The Associated Press that Kavanaugh also wanted to see it through to the finish.

Melania's comments about victims of abuse come just days after her husband Donald Trump made headlines for mocking Dr. Ford's testimony during a speech at a MS rally on October 2.

The hashtag BeersforBrett quickly gained momentum on Twitter.

President Trump, who was on a November 6 mid-term election campaign trail in Kansas, called Kavanaugh to congratulate him on his confirmation and swearing in.

Kavanaugh staunchly denied the allegations, but almost all Senate Democrats voted against his confirmation. Trump's administration has asked courts to allow that policy to go into effect, but so far to no avail.

Moments after Ms Collins pledged to back Mr Kavanaugh, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, in a tough race for re-election in West Virginia where Mr Trump is popular, also declared his support, leaving little doubt of a Republican victory.

As a result, Kavanaugh's lifetime appointment appeared to secure a solid majority of conservatives on the US highest court for years, a big win for Trump and the Republican Party.

Kavanaugh, 53, will solidify the nine-member Supreme Court's conservative majority.

The bitter duel between Republicans and Democrats over Kavanaugh is now likely to be prolonged as a motivating issue in the midterm elections in four weeks and will trigger recriminations and political reverberations that endure for years to come.

SC senator Lindsey Graham, who was one of the most ardent supporters of the Kavanaugh nomination, was also accosted activists lamenting his role in the process. And she said numerous demonstrators, regardless of their opinions about the Supreme Court nominee, shared a common sentiment: They don't feel their voices are being heard. "Folks who feel very strongly one way or the other about the issues in front of us should get out and vote and participate".

Corry Bliss, who runs the Congressional Leadership Fund to preserve the House GOP majority, said: "In the last week things have undeniably improved in our polling".

First lady Melania Trump says Brett Kavanaugh is "highly qualified" for the Supreme Court.

The U.S. first lady said the message of her tour to Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and Egypt was to show the world that "we care". Melania said she never heard her husband "saying those comments" and 'nobody discussed that with me'.

Brett Kavanaugh Confirmed to the Supreme Court of the U.S.
But she said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had found no corroborating evidence from witnesses whose names Ford had provided. The Senate narrowly voted Friday to limit debate on Kavanaugh's nomination, advancing it to Saturday's final confirmation vote.

But his ascent to the Supreme Court was thrown into doubt when university research psychologist Christine Blasey Ford testified that he had sexually assaulted her at a party when they were in high school.

Some 164 people were arrested, most for demonstrating on the Capitol steps, 14 for disrupting the Senate's roll call vote. "I don't remember", Trump said, as the audience laughed and cheered.

"It unleashed something inside me".

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley offered up some words of praise for protesters ahead of the vote.

"Our base is fired up".

"The Kavanaugh issue has nearly acted as a centrifuge to separate red and blue elements of the electorate even more", David Wasserman, House editor of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, told the Washington Post.

President Donald Trump told Fox News' Jeanine Pirro on Saturday that he mocked Christine Blasey Ford to "even the playing field" for then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Republicans emerged confident that the FBI investigation into the allegations unearthed no new corroborating details.

"The Democrats are willing to cause such destruction in the pursuit of power - just imagine the devastation they would cause if they ever obtained the power they so desperately want".

Ms Murkowski had earlier said that although Mr Kavanaugh was a "good man", he was "not the right person for the court at this time" and his "appearance of impropriety has become unavoidable".

But Democrats hope women angered at the Kavanaugh accusations will turn out in large numbers to reject Republicans.

"It is a sad day, but the recourse will have to be on election day", Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar told reporters.

Still, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said he believed it would be premature for Democrats to talk about re-investigating Kavanaugh or a possible impeachment if the party takes control of the chamber in November, stressing a need to help heal the country.
