Cambridge scientist Sir Greg Winter wins Nobel prize for chemistry

"The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has chose to award the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with one half to Frances H. Arnold for the directed evolution of enzymes and the other half jointly to George P. Smith and Gregory P. Winter for the phage display of peptides and antibodies".

Arnold, only the fifth woman to win a chemistry Nobel, was awarded half of the 9 million Swedish krona (US$1 million) prize while fellow American Smith and Winter of Britain shared the other half.

"This year's prize is about harnessing the power of evolution", the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

Hindustan Times, owned by HT Media Ltd, is one of India's largest publications that provides unbiased news, analysis and features on politics, sports, entertainment, lifestyle and more.

Meanwhile, Smith, of the University of Missouri, and Winter, a 67-year-old genetic engineer at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Cambridge, developed an "elegant method" known as phage display, where a bacteriophage - a virus that infects bacteria - can be used to evolve new proteins, the jury said.

Professor Allison is the "Vivian L. Smith Distinguished" Chair of the Department of Immunology, and Director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at the University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, USA.

"Evolution is the most powerful engineering method in the world, and we should make use of it to find new biological solutions to problems", she said. Virtually all of them build on what went on before. Our laureates have applied principles of Darwin in test tubes. "Mine was an idea in a line of research that built very naturally on the lines of research that went before".

He gave an example of a bee.

In his work, he determined the desired traits and worked to create conditions that would allow those traits to predominate in the test tube, he said.

Juventus 3-0 Young Boys
The hat-trick took Dybala's tally for the season to four for the season from seven games, netting just once in the league. It was the Young Boys's second defeat of the competition after they lost their opener 3-0 at home to Manchester United.

Trump mocks Christine Blasey Ford, says 'I've had so many false accusations'
Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy, the longest-serving current senator, said the mood in the Capitol is among the worst he has seen. A man who had a brief extramarital affair with Swetnick said that she enjoyed group sex and suffered from psychological issues.

Smith said he and his wife are discussing what to do with the cash prize, which they intend to donate.

That's it for this episode and for our coverage of the 2018 Nobel Prizes in the sciences.

"Instead of pumping oil out of the ground for making gasoline, now we can use sunlight stored in plants".

The uses of enzymes developed by Arnold include more environmentally-friendly manufacturing of chemical substances, such as pharmaceuticals and the production of renewable fuels for a greener transport sector.

"So with that I'd like to ask Claes Gustafsson, chairman of the Nobel committee, to make some remarks about the prize".

Scientists from the United States, Canada and France shared the physics prize Tuesday for revolutionizing the use of lasers in research.

Just yesterday, another female laureate was awarded the Nobel in physics. Strickland had worked with the third victor, Frenchman Gerard Mourou of the Ecole Polytechnique and the University of MI.

The 2018 Nobel season continues on Friday with the announcement of the peace prize, and wraps up on Monday with the economics prize.

Alfred Nobel, who created the prizes in his will, was himself a chemist, and devised his famed awards in part to atone for inventing dynamite.
