Amazon just raised its minimum wage to $15 for all employees

The company said the wage will benefit more than 250,000 of the company's employees, and another 100,000 seasonal employees.

As the "Fight for $15" kicks off its latest campaign, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos on Tuesday urged "our competitors and other large employers" to join the e-commerce giant in hiking worker pay, adding that "we listened to our critics".

Workers hired by temp agencies on behalf of Amazon will also be included, as will anyone working for any of Amazon's subsidiaries, such as Whole Foods. The people who sort, pack, ship and deliver orders for Amazon shoppers are crucial to Bezos's desire to make Amazon the one-stop shop for every purchase people might desire.

Amazon has been criticised for years over the state of working conditions in its 140 fulfillment centres around the world, including extensive and invasive security checks and being prevented from using the toilet.

The decision also raises the stakes for potential workers at Amazon's so-called HQ2 competition - its plan to create a second headquarters, with as many as 50,000 jobs. In 29 states and Washington, D.C., it's higher than the federal rate. Last month, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) introduced legislation that would tax businesses for the cost of employees' food stamps and other assistance programs. They have drawn a contrast with Bezos' spectacular wealth: He is the richest person alive, worth an estimated $165 billion. The rise for London workers will be 28%. His democratic opponent, Christine Hallquist, has said she supports the increase.

Amazon confirmed that it is phasing out its incentive pay component, replacing it with the $15 per hour minimum and no targets attached. The Walt Disney Company is to begin paying that wage to Disneyland workers in California next year and Disney World employees in Florida by 2021. "The current rate of $7.25 was set almost a decade ago", said Jay Carney, senior vice-president of Amazon global corporate affairs. Amazon shares fell close to 0.5% in the premarket before retracing losses to trade up 0.2% on Tuesday afternoon.

President Trump has also raised a variety of concerns about Amazon and Bezos. Amazon bought Whole Foods past year for almost $14 billion. That comes to $13.68 an hour.

The increase will apply from 1 November to all staff, full and part-time, as well as temporary and seasonal workers.

Amazon has announced that it will raise its hourly minimum wage to $15. It helps them save money that would be lost as trained workers leave for higher pay elsewhere. Amazon's current minimum hourly wage starts at $11, a source close to the company said.
