Most of those behind Ahvaz terrorist attack arrested: intelligence chief

While a traditional chant in the years since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, they have taken on a new meaning as Iranian officials have blamed the USA and its regional allies for backing the separatists, who carried out the assault while disguised in military uniforms.

The Daesh militant group claimed responsibility for the rare assault.

Senior commanders of the IRGC have said the Ahvaz attack was carried out by militants trained by Gulf states and Israel, and backed by America.

The attack was then claimed by another Ahvazi group, the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz, and the Islamic State group also claimed involvement. The group represents a community that has "long been neglected by the central government" and has poorer living standards in comparison to the rest of Iran.

"We promise that our reaction will be devastating, we warn everyone that we will take revenge", he told mourners.

The attack has further shaken Iran, already facing turmoil in the wake of the American withdraw from Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers and additional US sanctions that are due in November.

"We will punish the terrorists, one by one", he said.

Islamic State's Amaq agency posted a video of three men in a vehicle who it said were on their way to carry out the attack. "You will see that our response will be crushing and devastating and you will regret what you have done", Hossein Salami said in a speech broadcast live on Iran state television.

The separatists accuse Iran's Persian-dominated government of discriminating against its ethnic Arab minority.

"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack that took place in the Islamic Republic of Iran, in Ahvaz, on 22 September", read Haley's statement.

The Revolutionary Guards accused Shiite-dominated Iran's Sunni arch-rival Saudi Arabia of funding the attackers, while Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also blamed Iran's pro-US rivals.

Khamenei's remarks came as several of Iran's generals took tough tones to accuse the US of being involved in the attack. The UAE did not immediately acknowledge the summons. Iranian leaders blamed the USA and Israel and threatened retaliation.

The statements being made by Iran's leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on Monday, have all reinforced the idea that regardless of which group carried out the attack, the support came from further overseas.

Intelligence Minister Mahmud Alavi told the crowd that arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
