Here’s Why It Matters if Rod Rosenstein Gets Fired

Instead, Rosenstein was summoned to the White House where he had an "extended conversation" about recent news reports, but was not fired.

"The New York Times's story is inaccurate and factually incorrect", Rosenstein said in an earlier statement.

The reports come as Trump faces mounting pressure from the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is looking into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election. The Justice Department issued two statements from Rosenstein denying the remarks and released a separate statement from someone who said he recalled the recording comment but insisted that it was meant sarcastically.

Rosenstein reportedly stayed at the White House for routine meetings.

That would have seen the president kicked out of the White House because of an unspecified "impairment" and Vice President Mike Pence take over his job.

Rosenstein is under fire for report he discussed secretly recording the president and enlisting Cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office; chief intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge reports.

Democrats and many Republicans have warned Trump against any attempt to assume control of or shut down Mueller's investigation, either by firing Rosenstein to appoint a pliable successor, or dismissing Mueller directly. They say Rosenstein won't resign and the WH will have to fire him.

She said women could not get away with "even half of what a guy can do" . "But you know, that's neither here or there". I was on the other side, I didn't see the motion.

The 25th Amendment provides for the removal of a sitting president if he or she is judged unfit to carry out the duties of the office.

On Friday, The New York Times published a bombshell report alleging Rosenstein raised the prospect during a meeting with multiple Federal Bureau of Investigation officials of taping President Trump without his knowledge "to expose the chaos consuming the administration".

Intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and Judiciary Committee members including Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, accuse Rosenstein of stonewalling and foot-dragging congressional requests for information about the Russian Federation investigation. He received mixed messages.

He was also accused of making critical comments about the U.S. president. Other outlets have reported that the remarks were made in jest.

Update 2: Solicitor General Noel Francisco will now oversee the Mueller investigation, according to rules cited by Vox.

Rosenstein had been overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation because Attorney General Jeff Sessions had recused himself from the probe. "Michael Cohen should turn over any and all evidence to Special Counsel Mueller".
