Rob Gronkowski threatened to retire after almost being traded to Lions

The Lions, whom the Patriots play on "Sunday Night Football", were one of several teams that were talking about a trade with New England and Gronk didn't want to play for any of them.

Adding Gronkowski to the Lions would have only served to make winning the NFC North a more daunting task in 2018. Tight end Jacob Hollister, safety Patrick Chung, cornerback Eric Rowe and defensive end Trey Flowers also will be sidelined.

The Patriots tight end reportedly threatened retirement upon the Lions and Patriots almost completing a blockbuster trade for him last spring, sources told ESPN.

The Lions take on the Patriots Sunday night in Detroit. "Gronkowski even declined to return the Lions' calls, despite the fact that former Patriots executive Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia were leading the Detroit organization".
