Jimmy Butler Requests Trade from T'Wolves to Knicks, Nets, or Clippers

Jimmy Butler Requests Trade from T'Wolves to Knicks, Nets, or Clippers

What does that mean for next summer?

Given that Leonard's contract expires next summer, he could re-sign with Toronto - or leave for another team, like, say, the Clippers - in free agency in 2019. Butler has three preferred destination for a trade, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. However, his three-team shortlist includes both the Nets and Knicks.

Earlier this offseason, Yahoo's Chris Haynes noted Leonard was a high priority for the Clippers.

Moreover, despite reaching the playoffs, there were reports about Butler being unhappy by the work ethic of the younger Timberwolves.

This makes sense considering what we've heard about Leonard and his team desires recently.

The Clips will be able to offer two max contracts to free agents next summer.

But the chances of both players joining the Clippers appears less likely. But the Clippers should ask the same question as the NY teams: What's the rush? Being sentimental in this phase of his career is not too far off for the 12-time All-star, but everything just seems so coincidental especially with the Butler situation going about.

The Knicks may not be interested in trading for Butler, based on statements made by general manager Steve Mills on Monday. However, it's unclear whether Irving is even seriously considering leaving Boston.

But they will now be seeking out teams to offer the best trade package for Butler. Thibodeau is famously, and relentlessly, competitive, and it is hard to envision him being willing to part with a player who embodies everything he values in a player and whom he traded Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and the No. 7 pick in the 2017 National Basketball Association draft to acquire.

It'll be very interesting to see how this all plays out.
