Claim HMS Endeavour is found, solving one of the great maritime mysteries

Cook - and the HMB Endeavour - had successfully circumnavigated the globe. The ship bounded through the Pacific Ocean, scraping up against the Great Barrier Reef and stopping in New Zealand and Tahiti.

Cook is well-known in the nation's largest state - Alaska.

They believe the Endeavour, which was renamed Lord Sandwich, was deliberately sunk by the British in 1778 during the American War of Independence and that silt may have helped preserve it.

"The identification of the Lord Sandwich ex Endeavour in Newport Harbor will be particularly significant during this time of historical celebrations", the group said. Instead, it says the search for the ship has been narrowed from a "fleet of 13 vessels to five, and now possibly to one or two archaeological sites". There are hopes that some artifacts from the wreck will be sent to Australia as part of an exhibition to mark the 250 anniversary of Cook's historic exploration of Australia. But it has also touched on the challenging history associated with exploration, which connected Europe with the rest of the world but also cleared the way to the oppression and devastation of indigenous populations.

Archaeologists from the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) and the Australian National Maritime Museum will announce their latest findings Friday from 5-6 p.m.at Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina, according to a statement from Kathy Abbass, the executive director and principal investigator for RIMAP. The scientists have cautioned that time took a considerable toll on the remains.

This year is the 250th anniversary of Cook's departure from England in the Endeavour. It ended up telegraphing the cultures and surprising wildlife of far-off places back to Britain.

"In the midst of these breakers", wrote Banks in his journal on May 29th, 1769, "10 or 12 Indians were swimming who whenever a surf broke near them divd (sic) under it with infinite ease, rising up on the other side; but their chief amusement was carried on by the stern of an old canoe, with this before them they swam out as far as the outermost breach, then one or two would get into it and opposing the blunt end to the breaking wave were hurried in with incredible swiftness".

And almost 200 years after Cook explored the Pacific, NASA named the Space Shuttle Endeavour after the historic vessel; a wooden piece from the original ship was reportedly in the cockpit of the shuttle when it was blasted into space.

Like Columbus, Cook left a deep impression on the lands he explored, with towns, islands, mountains, rivers and a university named for him. He arrived off the south-east coast of what is now Australia in 1770, eventually making landfall at Botany Bay.

The captain sailed on the Endeavour for the first of his three voyages around the world. Cook was killed in a skirmish in Hawaii in 1797.
