Met Office issues weather warning for wind

The Met Office yellow weather warning for wind is in place for the East Midlands, eastern England, northeast England, northwest England, southwest England, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humber.

AA Ireland is warning motorists to exercise additional caution in the coming days as large amounts of rainfall are expected as the remnants of tropical Storm Helene pass over Ireland.

Deputy meteorologist for the Met Office Laura Ellam said: "Throughout this week we are expecting to see periods of strong winds across parts of the United Kingdom, as well as some heavy rain".

Forecasters at the Met Office have issued severe weather alerts as Hurricane Helene creeps closer to the UK.

A spell of strong winds for western and some central parts of the United Kingdom during Monday night and Tuesday morning, according to th eMet Office website.

But the majority of the strong winds are now expected to be felt over the Irish Sea only, on Monday night and into Tuesday morning.

The yellow warning is in place from 6am until 10pm on Wednesday with winds of up to 75mph possible.

"There is not a danger to life, but we are just saying be prepared for it be very windy for a while".

Storm Helene will travel up the West Coast on Monday and Tuesday, hitting Wales and travelling through parts of the North West.

She said: "Helene is moving up from the Atlantic towards us".

Longer journey times are also expected with road, rail, air and ferry services delays and cancellations likely.

The Met Office website says that the new weather warning on Wednesday could mean damage to buildings, including tiles being blown from roofs or falling trees and branches. It's expected to last until 6pm on Tuesday. Florence was 40 miles west of Columbia, S.C., and 215 miles southwest of Raleigh, N.C.in the latest advisory.
