In a Twitter comment, the US leader called the probe by special counsel Robert Mueller "illegal" and said it "continues in search of a crime".

Ken Starr, the man who led the investigation that resulted in President Bill Clinton's impeachment, said he was was not surprised to see former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller. Facing a second trial in weeks on a new set of charges related to his work in Ukraine, Manafort chose to accept a guilty plea that also requires him to work with investigators.

Manafort, who had already been found guilty of eight counts of tax fraud by a federal jury in Virginia, was supposed to begin a second trial in Washington federal court Monday.

The four New York City properties include three Manhattan apartments (two of which are in Soho; the third is his Trump Tower pad on Fifth Avenue) and a brownstone in Carroll Gardens.

Manafort played a role in one key event Mueller is investigating, a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower in NY, the then-candidate's campaign headquarters.

"I think that the Trump White House and the lawyers are taking a page from the Clinton playbook: Attack the prosecutor", Starr said. The younger Trump said no such information was provided and President Trump has said he was unaware of the meeting at the time it was scheduled. The reason: "The president did nothing wrong and Paul Manafort will tell the truth".

Trump had previously praised Manafort's decision to stay strong and not cooperate with investigators, especially after Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen chose to work with investigators.

"This was a very bad day for the Trump Administration".

Schiff said that after watching ex-Trump confidant Michael Cohen's legal troubles ensue, people should consider that "trust and loyalty with Trump run in one direction - only you're loyal to him, he's not loyal to you".
