Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert Respond To Donald Trump’s Claims About Puerto Rico

A report from George Washington University and the University of Puerto Rico concluded on August 29 that 2,975 likely died as a result of Hurricane Maria and the catastrophic conditions on the USA territory after the storm.

"Some extra people will have died of old age earlier than they would have if there'd been no hurricane". Trump in his tweets blamed Democrats for inflating the numbers. He says, "Then, like magic, '3000 PEOPLE KILLED'".

"The team found that lack of communication, well-established guidelines and training for physicians on how to certify deaths in disasters resulted in a limited number of deaths being identified as hurricane-related", read the study.

President Donald Trump has been "lying about Puerto Rico from the start to make himself look better", and on Thursday morning Trump lied once more by falsely claiming that a widely accepted academic study showing that almost 3,000 Puerto Ricans died as a result of Hurricane Maria was "done by the Democrats" in an attempt to make him "look as bad as possible".

Trump @realDonaldTrump "When Trump visited the island territory last October, OFFICIALS told him in a briefing 16 PEOPLE had died from Maria".

A military intelligence assessment warned days after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico of a "high" potential for government failure on the island, new documents obtained by the House Oversight Committee reveal.

After his tweets, Democrats accused Trump of minimising the death toll for callous political reasons.

NC resident dies plugging in a generator, marking 4th storm-related death
More than 100 people were rescued and up to 75 more were awaiting rescue on Saturday morning, according to a town official. Risky storm surges and rising tides have caused coastal areas to be flooded, with water rushing inland from the shoreline.

"Now, folks, if you watch the show, you know we kid the president about being a awful person", he said.

"I don't think that's fair", said Huntsman, who added she also didn't think it was fair to compare Trump's action's to those of a dictator, something that was mentioned on the previous day's show.

Trump said the number of deaths when he visited Puerto Rico after the storm was "from 6 to 18", even though news outlets were already reporting dozens, if not hundreds, of additional casualties that were likely uncounted.

Thursday's tweets drew the ire of Carmen Yulin Cruz, the mayor of Puerto Rico's capital, San Juan, who has sharply criticized both the president and his administration's response to Maria. He first boasted of the "incredible unsung success" the administration achieved in Puerto Rico, when asked if there were lessons learned from response to that hurricane, as he commemorated the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attack that killed 3K in NYC, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

George Washington University researchers stood by their study, responding to Trump's tweet by saying the study was carried out "with complete independence and freedom from any kind of interference".

As Hurricane Florence is barreling through the Carolinas, Santos-Vasquez said the president did not pay as much attention to Puerto Rico versus the Carolinas. "And I came in and there was a crowd of a lot of people".

The death toll attributed to Florence stands at 11, including 10 in North Carolina and one in SC.
