Syrian regime downs Israeli missiles near Damascus airport

Syrian military air defenses downed several missiles fired by Israel near Damascus airport on Saturday night, Syrian state media said.

"Our air defence systems thwarted an Israeli missile aggression on Damascus International Airport", Syrian regime news agency SANA cited a military source as saying.

"The missiles, suspected to be Israeli, destroyed an arms warehouse near the Damascus global airport", Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. A SANA reporter meanwhile reported sounds of explosions in the vicinity of the airport.

AFP's correspondent in Damascus heard a loud blast late Saturday, followed by several smaller explosions.

The agency released a short video showing what is says is an anti-aircraft missile in flight over Damascus. According to the report, several Israeli missiles were intercepted by Syrian air defenses.

Israel does not regularly comment on alleged strikes in Syria.

Earlier this month, Israel's Defense Forces said it carried out more than 200 airstrikes in Syria over the a year ago, many of which Israel claimed were targeting Iranian positions and weapons convoys.

Israel rarely acknowledges attacks inside Syria, but has said it would use military action to prevent weapons transfers to its enemies.

This month, Israel acknowledged having carried out more than 200 strikes in war-ravaged Syria over the past 18 months, mainly against Iranian targets.

While Russia does not seem to have accepted Israel's demand for Iran to be completely removed from Syria, it has agreed to force the Islamic Republic's forces and proxies to leave the areas closest to the border with Israel.
