Presidential emergency alert system text coming next week

Next Thursday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will do its first test of a system that allows the president to send a message to most US cellphones.

Trump is about to get his own "presidential alert" system plugged into your cell phone.

"The EAS is a national public warning system that provides the President with the communications capability to address the nation during a national emergency", the statement continued.

The U.S. government is preparing to conduct the first nationwide test of a feature created to help the president reach the public during emergencies by sending warnings relayed through the country's largest wireless network providers to mobile phones within range. Under the Warning, Alert, and Response Network (WARN) Act of 2006, cellphone users can not opt out of the presidential alerts. Cell phone users can opt out of natural disaster or missing children alerts. "No action is needed". The president has sole responsibility for determining when the national-level alerts are used.

In a real situation, the system would be used to warn the public about risky weather, missing children, or another critical situation that may require you to evacuate or remain in place.

The EAS is also used with radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers, the agency said.

FLORENCE: Multiple fatalities linked to hurricane

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Liverpool - Football Match Report
Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Wembley on Saturday as they continued their faultless start to the Premier League season. Erik Lamela grabbed a late consolation for Spurs, who could not avoid a second straight Premier League defeat.

In the event of widespread severe weather or another significant event on September 20, the test will be pushed back to October 3, FEMA said.

The latest announcement about the alert comes amid a flurry of tweets from President Donald Trump's personal Twitter account in recent days regarding Hurricane Florence.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its role in planning the test alert. It will interrupt programming for approximately one minute, FEMA said.

You can expect to see the alert pop up on your phone at 2:18 p.m. ET so long as you have your phone turned on, are within range of a cell tower, and if your wireless provider is part of the WEA system.

The test alert, whose date the Trump administration announced in July, will come at a politically sensitive time: about two months before congressional elections on November 6.

There have been issues with prior state alerts.
