FLORENCE: Multiple fatalities linked to hurricane

The rain has turned sideways, rivers are swollen and flood waters are swamping streets as the fury of Hurricane Florence threatens the Carolina's with life-threatening conditions. American media reported at least seven casualties.

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WFMY)-Five people, including an infant, have been killed by Tropical Storm Florence Friday in North Carolina by, according to local and state agencies.

Two people died in Lenoir County. The governor's office said a man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords in the rain.

Areas like New Bern also could see an additional 3 to 5 feet of storm surge as high tide combines with the seawater still being pushed ashore by Florence, Graham said.

In Craven County, authorities say they received more than 150 telephone calls to rescue people in the historic town of New Bern because water had entered their homes.

Hurricane Florence made landfall Friday in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, after stalking the coastline for days. Officials said some 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to evacuate, but it was unclear how many did.

The National Hurricane Centre said Florence will eventually make a right turn to the north east over the southern Appalachians, moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England as a tropical depression by the middle of next week.

Water rescues continued as the remnants of Florence stalled over North Carolina, dumping several feet of rain and shattering records - and more was on the way.

At least 780,000 customers were without power by Saturday afternoon, including N.C. Electric Cooperatives customers, and customers across Duke's territory in North and SC.

The storm is expected to turn west and then north moving through the Carolinas and the Ohio Valley by Monday, the NHC said early on Saturday.

In the Upstate, which was expected to feel much milder effects from Florence, the storm's winds may have contributed to a woman's death Friday night.
