ATF warns East Coast gun dealers to prepare ahead of Hurricane Florence

In a 5 p.m. EDT update from the NHC, the storm's winds rose to 140 miles per hour, and it picked up speed in its westward track, doubling its speed from Sunday to 13 miles per hour.

The eye of the storm is due to meet land near the border between North Carolina and SC on Saturday, according to the latest information from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

For many people, the challenge could be finding a safe refuge.

Throughout the Carolinas, residents are buying up water, canned food and other supplies in preparation for the hurricane, which is expected to approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday morning. The center of the massive storm is then forecast to meander Thursday, Friday and Saturday over a stretch of coastline saturated by rising seas.

Forecasts indicated potential for strengthening towards category five hurricane over the next 48 hours, though increasing southwesterly shear over SE U.S.A make cause a little weakening before landfall. But authorities warned it will still be an extremely risky hurricane.

"We want to make sure that we get the best data going to the National Hurricane Center. and to emergency managers and to the media so we can get people out of the way", Flaherty said. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles. He says that "over the years the state government and the federal government have become very coordinated in their ability to manage the pre-deployment of assets (and) the response to the citizens of those states, and we will soon be into the recovery".

"Don't play games with it".

"This one is hard", she said, having been through hurricane damage before.

Storm "Florence" promises to be the most powerful in 30 years. SC is one-waying several interstates including I-26 out of Charleston. Airlines had canceled almost 1,000 flights and counting.

John McGowan, a resident of a town just west of Wilmington, said Tuesday he planned on staying through the storm - but filled his vehicle with gas in case he changes his mind.

Their deployment can last from a few days to a few weeks.

The store, she said, was starting to run out, and was limiting each customer to 12 pieces.

Computer models of exactly what the storm might do varied, adding to the uncertainty.

A mother and infant in North Carolina are dead after a tree fell on their home - the first two fatalities of Hurricane Florence. That also means that colossal weather systems like Hurricane Florence are easy to observe as the spacecraft cruises along.

"This one really scares me", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said. The hurricane is projected to reach inland areas including Stanly County.

"(R) esidents and guests of Beaufort County will be allowed to travel within county borders, until there is a need for lane reversals on USA 278 and US 21", a Monday evening message from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said, urging residents to leave by Tuesday.

"We've had our lessons".

In Virginia, where about 245,000 residents were ordered to evacuate low-lying areas, officials urged people to remain away from home despite forecast changes showing Florence's path largely missing the state.

In North Carolina, coastal evacuations were also underway late Monday - with more scheduled to begin on Tuesday. Unsure of what they might find when they return home, the couple went shopping for a recreational vehicle.

"While it's still too early to know the storm's path, we know we have to be prepared", Gov. Cooper said, according to a press release. Justin Kibbey also recalled the distinctness of the storm's eye.
