Trump Tweets Ford Can Make SUV in US It Won't.

Ford won't be moving production of a hatchback wagon to the United States from China, despite President Donald Trump's claim Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018 that his taxes on Chinese imports mean the Focus Active can be built in America.

On August 31, Ford announced it was canceling plans to ship the Focus Active to the US from China - citing new tariffs on Chinese imports.

As The New York Times notes, it was the second such tweet in as many days, after Trump on Saturday called on Apple to begin making iPhones in the US if it wanted to avoid import tariffs.

Trump tweeted on September 8 that Apple should build new manufacturing plants in the United States to avoid tariffs on Chinese imports that the U.S. government is planning to introduce. That is why companies like Ford cannot sell their vehicles, which they make overseas, in the U.S.

The tariffs are top of mind for Apple chief executive Tim Cook, who has personally lobbied Trump for months on issues of taxes and trade, even dining with the president and first lady Melania Trump at Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster, New Jersey, last month.

In a letter to the Office of United States Trade Representative, Apple said the Apple Watch, Apple Pencil, Air Pods, and leather cases for the iPhone would be affected by Trump's proposed tariffs. It also said that every Apple product "contains parts or materials from the United States and is made with equipment from US-based suppliers". That helped fan concerns of trade tensions between Asia and the USA, which led many Asian markets lower.

Washington has already imposed taxes on Chinese imports to the tune of $50 billion (€43.2 billion), and has threatened to slap levies on another $267 billion worth of goods from there - covering virtually all of China's exports to the US.

"Semiconductors are America's fourth-largest export, and our industry has a global trade surplus of over $6 billion and a surplus with China of close to $2 billion in 2017", Intel's letter said.

Spared until now, mobile telephones, the biggest US import from China, would be engulfed if Trump activates the $267 billion tariff list.
