Boris Johnson lashes out at Northern Ireland backstop threat to Union

Under the current plan, the United Kingdom is "set to agree to accept" Brussels' rules, the politician says.

Mr Farage said: "Sir Alan?"

"It is a humiliation. We look like a seven-stone weakling being comically bent out of shape by a 500-pound gorilla".

Mr Johnson said there are "far better technical solutions" to the Irish border issue.

While Mr Javid voiced measured criticism of Mr Johnson, other Tories reacted more angrily to his remarks.

The Tory MP and ex-army officer Tom Tugendhat, who chairs the foreign affairs committee, said: A suicide bomber murdered many in the courtyard of my office in Helmand.

"Comparing the PM to that isn't amusing".

'This marks one of the most disgusting moments in modern British politics.

Government minister Sir Alan Duncan, Mr Johnson's former deputy at the Foreign Office, said: "For Boris to say that the PM's view is like that of a suicide bomber is too much".

"There is no justification for such an outrageous, inappropriate and hurtful analogy", Minister of State for International Development Alistair Burt added. What has received considerable scorn, however, is the language he used. Again, I say, enough.

Backbench Tory MP Nadine Dorries said Johnson's critics were "terrified of his popular appeal".

"It is not news that he has a difference of opinion with the prime minister and that's why he left government", Home Secretary Sajid Javid told the BBC's Andrew Marr show.

A former advisor to David Cameron believes that the character of Boris Johnson matters to an "important section" of the electorate who wouldn't want these characteristics in their Prime Minister.

"U$3 nder the Chequers proposal, we are set to agree to accept their rules - forever - with no say on the making of those rules", he complained.

Ahead of a potentially hard Conservative Party conference, Mr Hunt said the Prime Minister's efforts to achieve the best outcome for Britain "will be greatly strengthened if we are united behind her".

The 4,000-word "dirty dossier" cataloguing allegations about Mr Johnson's personal life was circulating in Westminster before he announced on Friday that he and his wife, Marina Wheeler, were seeking a divorce after 25 years of marriage.

Sunday's newspapers were filled with lurid details about Johnson's alleged infidelity in the past.

The paper says it has seen the document - said to have been written during the Conservative leadership contest - but officials at Downing Street and Conservative Campaign Headquarters have denied circulating it.

It also warned that the "necessity to call on military assistance is a real possibility" in the weeks after UK's departure from the EU.

"I think he is wrong on this - I think the tone that he has used isn't right and I think that we just need to be very focused on actually moving forward with the Chequers plan", he added.
