'Worst match of Roger Federer's career' - Reaction to stunning John Millman win

'Worst match of Roger Federer's career' - Reaction to stunning John Millman win

Five-time champion Roger Federer crashed out of the US Open on Monday, beaten in four sets by 55-ranked Australian John Millman.

But the combination of heat, humidity and blazing sunshine was no joke.

"On court, he recognised that he may have got the great one on a rare night off, or an occasion where an ailment had blunted his brilliance", Fairfax media said in an analysis. There was no circulation at all. For some reason, I struggled in the conditions tonight.

Bathed in sweat and wearing a thunderous frown, Roger Federer suffered one of his rare grand-slam shockers in NY on Monday night.

The heat, though, is much tougher on Djokovic, who showed the same blank expression, rosy cheeks and sweat-soaked shirt as during his first-round match last week. When you go out on court, I think it's about engaging in a battle.

"John was able to deal with it better".

However, there also seems to be another factor as to why Federer failed to reach the quarter-final, and he's discussed it in his post-match presser.

The 20-time Grand Slam victor has always been an admirer of the Australian, who had had to battle back from three crushing surgeries and the depths of despair to earn his big-stage opportunity in NY.

"Roger's a hero of mine". I'm happy I'm getting a rest now. "If you do that, I think you can get bogged down and you're in a bit of trouble". "We had a great few days, a good time together".

Millman will face Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in the US Open quarter-finals on Wednesday. That was 10 years ago.

"I felt like a bit of a deer in the headlights to begin with. But at the same time, there is a little biological clock that is not really working in your favour", Djokovic said. "We are putting in all the work but sometimes you just have to survive".

The last Japanese woman to reach the final eight in a Grand Slam had been Shinobu Asagoe at the 2004 U.S. Open.

Kim may be set for White House return
She said in a statement in May released by that group, "When I looked at Alice, I said we can't just stop with one person". - Kim Kardashian West is reportedly in Washington , DC to meet with President Donald Trump , TMZ reports .

"(I was) really lucky to finish in three sets, it was really hot on the court", Nishikori said in an on-court interview.

Still, this was a stunner.

Federer also hit 10 double faults against Carlos Moya at the 1999 Marseille Open (the Swiss still won the match), against Filip Dewulf at the 2000 Copenhagen Open, against Arnaud Clement at the 2001 Australian Open and against Andy Roddick at the 2003 Rogers Cup in Montreal. He netted a service return, and Millman converted his second set point to seize a two sets to one lead.

Yet only when Federer starts losing on a regular basis to players like Millman will he know the game is up, that his precious aura is being tarnished, and there is no sign of that happening at this point.

'I have so much respect for Roger and everything he's done for the game.

And then there was his serve.

Twentieth seed Naomi Osaka, who secured straight-sets victories in her first three matches, meets 26th seed Aryna Sabalenka. He started that 15-minute struggle by missing 18 of his initial 20 first serves.

But Cilic still needed a third match point to clinch it.

Federer's tension was clear in both his game and his demeanour during a stuffy night in NY.

Millman's big rips on groundstrokes didn't help matters. This is a guy who had never managed to beat a top-10 player, let alone a man who has spent more weeks at No. 1 in the ATP rankings than anyone else. He cracked, double faulting again and making two more unforced errors, as Millman roared back to level the match at 1-1.

In this phenomenal era, and over five sets in the sapping humidity of NY, we should not be at all surprised Federer has fallen short but we are allowed to feel a little glum.
