Federer turns on the style to take sting out of Kyrgios

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev suffered another disappointing grand slam loss, this time to compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber, but former champion Marin Cilic came from two sets down to defeat Australian teenager Alex De Minaur 4-6 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5 with the game ending at 2.22am.

The third set was a more competitive affair but despite showing good determination to fight off two break points at 3-3 Kyrgios was unable to repeat the feat four games later as Federer broke before securing victory with an ace to take the acclaim from the NY crowd and his watching family.

However, Federer turned on the burners to race towards the net before flicking his return past the outside of the post. Even Kyrgios stopped to appreciate the moment.

"It was nearly unreal", he said. "Clearly when you play that way and you lose, it's always, like, you feel like he's so much to blame, but that's just how he plays", said Federer.

The highlight of a more competitive final set, which featured a host of entertaining exchanges, saw Federer draw gasps from Kyrgios with a stunning forehand around the net post that barely reached knee height.

"The net is out further and the court is more narrow, so for a shot like this to happen in a practice, you will be running into a fence and you will hit it into the net". I think I was super, super OCD, and I tried to kind of wipe that away.

Instead, Kyrgios was talking to himself, muttering about needing to hire a coach, a comment he later denied making though microphones caught his voice, loud and clear.
