Doc Now Works With Nurse Who Helped Save Him as a Baby

The nurse was working at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, California, the other day when she encountered a pediatric neurology resident on his morning rounds.

The man in question - Brendan Seminatore - is now a second-year paediatric neurology resident at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

The nurse and doctor took a new photo together in the NICU - this time, Seminatore is a few inches taller than Wong, and he's wearing scrubs instead of a onesie and blanket. He continued, "As a doctor, I reflected on the importance of the work I do".

Seminatore described meeting the nurse who had taken such good care of him as an infant as a "surreal experience," adding that "she cares deeply for her patients, to the point that she was able to remember a patient's name nearly three decades later". "I said, 'Yes, I was actually born in this hospital, '" Seminatore said.

"His last name sounded very familiar", she recalled.

"There was a big silence", she said, "and then he asked if I was Vilma".

"Vilma walked up to me when she saw my name tag", Seminatore, 28, told TODAY. To his amazement, she was still working on the wards.

It had been more than 28 years since Vilma Wong heard the name Seminatore. "I said yes!" Wong said. "I then got very suspicious because I remember being the primary nurse to a baby with the same last name".

Seminatore said meeting her again was "surreal" but he was touched that he still remembered him considering how many babies she had to look after over the years.

Wong shared the same sentiment.

A week before his rotation started, Seminatore's mother told him about a nurse she and his father had bonded with during the more than 40 days he spent in the NICU.

Seminatore was born in Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford, where Wong has worked for 32 years. By that time, he was able to eat on his own and was beginning to thrive, Wong remembered.

For Seminatore, the stoic nurse has inspired him to dedicate his life to providing the very best care possible for his patients.

Vilma said she was in shock, but overjoyed.

Despite the almost three decades in between, and the thousands of babies Wong has since cared for after Seminatore was discharged, she immediately recognized his name when she heard it.

"Not all of us will get the chance to see our patients grow up, and I was so happy to be able to share that moment with her", he added.
