Samsung confirms foldable phone for this year

Now that DJ Koh, the CEO of Samsung's mobile division, has suggested the company might unveil its long-awaited foldable smartphone later this fall, we're getting some new details about what the design of this handset will consist of.

The executive further said that the company is launching a foldable device on the basis of the demand and feedback it got through multiple consumer surveys.

If you own these devices and are looking for a way out, you might want to consider upgrading to Samsung's other smartphones that still offer support. The third screen is located on the opposite side and allows you to access certain functions when the phone is folded. "If the unfolded experience is the same as the tablet, why would they (consumers) buy it?" Analysts are also weighing in on the matter; they think Samsung will be the first one to react, "by adopting the triple-lens camera system for its flagship models early next year".

Previously Samsung has confirmed it was working on a device with a foldable screen - a phone that has always been codenamed the Samsung Galaxy X - but this is the first time we've had a clear launch window, and the information is straight from the head of Samsung's mobile division as well.

Samsung is nearly ready to reveal the foldable smartphone it's been working on since at least 2015. With that general framework set forth by their CEO, Samsung's developers have been working to make sure the new device is not a gimmick. But the South Korean tech major is likely to focus on creating an actual display that bends. There have been plenty of rumors claiming that Samsung will release its first foldable smartphone this year. Koh admitted that it is a complicated device to build and still not complete.

More than just a tablet-like device, Koh hinted that the new smartphone will have unique features to differentiate itself from standard smartphones and their larger tablet counterparts. I'm actually OK if it goes from phone to tablet, because that would mean a bigger screen for consuming content or playing games.

The sales of the company's smartphones are also falling considerably and the recently revealed flagships aren't expected to improve the situation.
