Roy Moore sues Sacha Baron Cohen for $95m

According to AAP and The Washington Post, the lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in the USA and accuses Cohen of smearing Moore's name and intentionally inflicting emotional distress.

Moore appeared on an episode of Cohen's "Who is America?" where the "Borat" comic posed as an Israeli anti-terrorism expert named Col. Erran Morad and waved what he said was a new piece of technology that can identify pedophiles.

The episode came months after a number of women came forward with allegations against Moore, accusing him of initiating sexual relationships with them when they were in high school and he was an adult. He denied the allegations.

He is represented by Larry Klayman, the founder of Judicial Watch and Freedom Watch.

Roy Moore, a former candidate for the US Senate, appeared on Who Is America? in July on the pretence of accepting an award for his support for Israel.

The lawsuit ultimately claims the "fraudulent portrayal and mocking of Judge Moore as a sex offender" on the television show "severely harmed" his reputation and caused his family "severe emotional distress", as well as "financial damage". Cohen tweeted ahead of the show's finale last month. They are asking for relief in excess of $95 million dollars, not including attorneys' fees.

In the show broadcast in the USA in July, when the beep sounds, Mr Moore tells Baron Cohen: "I support Israel".

The wand device remained silent as Cohen passed it over himself, but it beeped after he passed it over Moore several times.

"Defendant Cohen's character falsely and fraudulently introduced a false and fraudulent "device" supposedly invented by the Israeli Army to detect pedophiles".

Representatives for Baron Cohen have not responded to the lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Washington.

Mr Moore was not the first public figure duped into a fake interview in a Baron Cohen show.

While Moore signed a release for the interview, the case alleges that release itself was fraudulent.

Baron Cohen has faced past lawsuits over similar pranks, but those actions faltered because the individuals had signed releases.

The video has been viewed on YouTube more than 3.8 million times since it was published on July 29.
