Ayanna Pressley Defeats Longtime Representative Mike Capuano in MA Democratic Primary Upset

- Ayanna Pressley is all but assured of becoming the first black woman elected to Congress from MA, the latest example of the Democratic Party's embrace of diversity and liberal politics as the recipe for success in the Trump era.

U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, who district included Randolph and part of Milton, was dealt a stunning defeat by Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, who campaign had drawn national attention.

With no Republicans on the ticket in Tuesday's nominating primary, Ms Pressley is all but certain to succeed Mr Capuano in Washington in November's congressional elections.

- Dave Weigel (@daveweigel) September 5, 2018 Listen to me. "I know that wherever the pain exists, the solutions exist within that community as well". There, as the New York Times reports, she reformed the city's liquor licensing process, updated Boston Public Schools' policy for pregnant and parenting teens, and created a City Council committee focused on women and girls. Pressley, though, was already a well-known figure in MA politics, and the race was seen as close and competitive for months. "I want to say I am so proud for my new congresswoman, who got elected yesterday who worked so hard for the last six months, and I can tell you she worked really hard".

Tahirah Amatul-Wadud lost the state's 1st Congressional District to Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.). And in another upset, Nika Elugardo beat incumbent state Representative Jeffrey Sánchez in the 15th Suffolk District.

Bookman, who volunteered to drive voters to the polls on Tuesday for Pressley, said those she met were excited by her candidacy, feeling a certain kinship.

Her total in Boston was just 1,800 fewer votes than Capuano received throughout the whole 7th district.

That she'd diversify Massachusetts' all-white, mostly male House delegation is "the bonus" of her candidacy she said during that interview. "On the other hand, I think it's really important to acknowledge that women, particularly women of color, still have incredible barriers to becoming candidates".

In the secretary of state race, we saw another challenge to the establishment in a sometimes-fiery contest between longtime incumbent Bill Galvin and energetic challenger Josh Zakim.

"It's not enough for Democrats to be back in power", she said at her election night celebration.

Pressley was likely aided by the demographics of the 7th district, which cuts a north-south swathe through the city of Boston and includes the suburbs of Chelsea, Everett, and Somerville - where Capuano served as mayor for nine years in the 1990s.

"Congratulations to my sister in service, [Ayanna Pressley], on continuing her historic path into Congress tonight", the socialist tweeted.
