Tropical Storm Gordon: Seventh named storm forms near South Florida

The wet weather comes after thunderstorms rolled in Sunday, spinning off what could become Tropical Storm Gordon off Florida's southwest coast by Monday evening. Since the storm will have weakened, the main threats for North Texas will be heavy, tropical rains.

The storm was expected to strengthen over the Gulf of Mexico, and reach the central Gulf Coast states of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana late on Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

A third system has moved off the African coast, and is forecast to move westward across the Atlantic.

The National Hurricane Center says tropical storm conditions and heavy rainfall are possible over parts of the central U.S. Gulf Coast in coming days. They have put an 80% chance of formation within the next 48 hours.

Beyond Florence, models consistently show a string of potent tropical waves leaving Africa, so the peak of the season should be active. With maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, it was heading west-northwest at 16 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The disturbance is now disorganized and poses little chance of development due to unfavorable upper level winds. There were no immediate indications that the storm had so far affected energy operations in the Gulf of Mexico area.

The storm may gain strength as it crosses the warm waters in the Gulf, Stewart said. Impacts are likely to start by Tuesday though much uncertainty remains in the intensity of the system.

The track beyond this time frame is still a little uncertain. "Coastal flood advisories or warnings may be needed late Monday through midweek". If caught in a rip current, relax and float.

But the weekend storms did cause some headaches for residents.

Meanwhile, Florence continued to strengthen and as of Sunday morning had winds of 60 miles per hour.

Previous story: Tropical Storm Gordon is moving quickly, expected to pass through southeast Florida by this afternoon, but tropical storm warnings are in effect for areas of Miami-Dade, Collier and Monroe counties as heavy rain continues.
