United Kingdom ex-chief rabbi warns of Jewish exodus over anti-Semitism

Gordon Brown has called for the Labour Party to "unanimously, unequivocally and immediately" adopt the internationally agreed definition of anti-Semitism.

This was the warning from former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who wants Labour to adopt a definition of antisemitism which has caused huge controversy within the party.

"Antisemitism is one aspect of what is a deeper problem with the politics of Jeremy Corbyn and the people around him which is sort of a visceral anti-Western position", Blair said in an exclusive interview to mark the launch of Euronews' Raw Politics show. The Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council have drawn up a letter accusing Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn of failing to address anti-Semitism in his party. I believe that the Labour Party must and should change the policy.

Momentum said it planned to work with NEC members, the trade unions, and delegates to ensure "the best possible rule change" was passed at the party conference, which begins 23 September, in Liverpool.

"Corbyn has got a problem to deal with and the problem is he is the problem", she said.

"It is needed now to deal with practical threats, to confront gathering dangers and on-the-ground realities of very real, week-by-week threats to Jewish communities that demand an unequivocal response and unqualified resolve", Brown told the Jewish Labour Movement conference.

Commenters on the event's Facebook page pointed out the irony of the panelists, especially the Jewish ones, defending Corbyn from anti-Semitism charges on the day when most Jews will be in synagogue.

This morning the former chief rabbi, Lord Sacks, warned the majority of Jews were now questioning whether Britain was a safe place to bring up their children as a result of the row.

"As long as we are seen as an anti-Semitic and racist party, ordinary people will not tolerate a part that is seeped in anti-Semitism". "Now, this is very, very worrying".

Labour has been engulfed by stories about anti-Semitism over the summer with two MPs - John Woodcock and Frank Field - resigning the whip in protest and others threatening to do the same.

Jeremy Corbyn has come under prolonged attack for refusing to adopt fully the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism in Labour's new code of conduct.

"I'm imagining that you would take issue with a police officer being a member of any political party? And you know, at the moment it's a struggle", he said.

However, Mr McDonnell said comparisons between Mr Corbyn and Enoch Powell were "just wrong" and invited Lord Sacks to meet the Labour leader. Join the debate every weekday from Sept 3.
