Trump threatens to end NAFTA

As efforts stalled Friday to persuade Canada to sign onto a rewrite of the North American Free Trade Agreement, President Donald Trump blasted "dishonest reporting" for complicating a potential deal after off-the-record comments he made during an interview with Bloomberg leaked into the Canadian press.

Lighthizer still plans to send a notice to Congress on Friday of Trump's intention to sign a deal to replace NAFTA, as the administration has previously indicated, a source told the news service.

Trump's tweet was evidently in response to an article posted on August 31 by the Toronto Star, which obtained comments he made to Bloomberg News that were hostile and insulting to Canada. "Congress should not interfere with these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off", the tweet read.

Trilateral trade between the NAFTA countries has exceeded one trillion dollars annually in recent years, according to a 2017 report by the US Congressional Research Service.

In the wide-ranging NAFTA deal it struck with the U.S., Mexico has reportedly already agreed to do away with tool, designed specifically to adjudicate appeals of anti-dumping and countervailing (anti-subsidy) duties. But Canada insisted that it would only sign a new agreement that is good for the country.

"There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new Nafta deal", Trump said in one of a series of tweets as he visited his Virginia golf club while three former presidents and a range of political dignitaries attended a Washington memorial for the late Senator John McCain.

Both he and Horlick said the evidence indicates that, despite complaints, there is no evidence that the courts rule along the lines of the country that has the majority on a given case.

With a pledge to resume talks next week, Freeland spoke of progress, of optimism and of her determination to get a deal that's good for Canadians - a remarkable show of restraint on a day that began with another blast of now-familiar Trump bombast that landed like an anvil on the negotiating table.

The negotiation tactics of the Trump administration is "a classic power play", says Evenett.

"The impact of the reworked NAFTA deal will be absolutely trivial for global trade", says Evenett.

A spokesperson said Trudeau also spoke with Jerry Dias, the president of the Unifor union which represents autoworkers, and Hassan Yussuff, the president of the Canadian Labour Congress.

Canada doesn't have much of an objection to the auto provisions of the U.S.

Trump tweeted that the United States was "far better off before Nafta - should never have been signed".

Trump has repeatedly criticized Canada's dairy industry and has used the threat of tariffs on Canada's auto production to push for concessions.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the dispute between US and Canada hinges on agricultural and media protection policies, as well as the installation of a system that would allow any of the three countries in the agreement to challenge tariffs imposed by one of the others.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland downplayed the impact of Trump's remarks on the talks.
