Swiss maestro Federer knocks brash Aussie Kyrgios out of US Open

But sometimes being unconventional can work against you the way it did for Nick Kyrgios on Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Open.

A highly entertaining but ultimately one-sided US Open third round ended with Federer playing the straight man and winning 6-4 6-1 7-5 in a match played at breakneck speed.

The sixth-seeded Djokovic, who won Wimbledon in July, has looked his dominant self in the first two rounds of the tournament and is searching for his 14th career Grand Slam title and third at the final major of the year in NY.

Now, having lost for the third time to Federer, Kyrgios believes the great Swiss can steer him on the right path.

'Of course I'm happy it was three sets, at the beginning it was hard to get any rhythm.

"I could take a leaf out of his book", he said, "just the way he goes about things, his demeanor". The way he behaves on court. "He's the ultimate role model to anyone who wants to play".

After announcing his arrival on the worldwide stage with a spectacular centre-court ambush of world No.1 Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2014, Kyrgios has just two grand slam quarter-final appearances, plus four ATP titles, on his CV.

Mouth open, jaw-dropped. He approached the net looking as if he wanted to high five the second seed.

Democrats are increasingly bullish about their chances to capture the 23 seats they need to retake the House of Representatives. Trump is aiming to spend more than 40 days on the campaign trail between the beginning of August and the November 6 midterms.

He still has time on his side, but he knows that the clock is ticking.

"I think if he breaks there he probably runs away and wins that first set", Federer said.

The 31-year-old Sharapova won their only previous career meeting, a tight three setter on the clay at the Rome Masters earlier this year. I have barely done anything. "He came out firing a lot of aces and feeling good".

American tennis legend John McEnroe again led the public criticism of Kyrgios' performance - saying he simply hopes the Australian is able to learn from the lesson Federer handed out. "He's just come to Switzerland to train with me and he's a great guy".

I think in Stuttgart, maybe or some other place, he warmed up against me only hitting my serves.

Kyrgios, the quirky Australian with a powerful serve, likes being a bit unpredictable on the court, attempting shots most wouldn't and carrying on conversations with himself throughout a match.

"Clearly", Federer said, "when you play that way and you lose, it's always, like, you feel like he's so much to blame".

The victor of 98 singles titles schooled Kyrgios, showing the brash young player that it takes more than cocksure attitude and a big serve to win a Grand Slam event. "He was too good".
