Venezuela's Government Says It Repatriated 89 Citizens From Peru

Almost one hundred Venezuelan migrants in Peru are making an unexpected journey back home after fleeing their nation's economic and humanitarian crisis.

Following those clashes, President Temer sent a small contingent of troops to the border town of Pacaraima, where the unrest happened.

Peru, one of the region's fastest-growing economies with 4.7 percent growth projected for next year, is a particularly popular destination, with an estimated 400,000 Venezuelans already living there. "It is a threat to the harmony of the whole continent", Temer said in a televised address. He said the move was for the safety of both Brazilian citizens and Venezuelan migrants.

Meanwhile, Peru's President Martín Vizcarra declared a temporary health emergency in areas along the country's northern border.

What is happening in Venezuela?

Venezuela's economic crisis, exacerbated by a fall in oil prices, has caused basic goods, including food and medicine, to be in short supply, unavailable or unaffordable.

The United Nations estimates 2.3 million Venezuelans have fled since 2014 as their nation slides into a crisis considered worse than the Great Depression.

Regional tensions have been stoked, as neighbouring countries struggle to accommodate the exodus of Venezuelans.

He said there was "imminent danger" to health and sanitation due to the mass migration of Venezuelans.

What are neighbouring countries doing?

The International Organization for Migration and the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said last week that more than 2.3 million Venezuelans are living overseas and more than 1.6 million have left the country since 2015.

Security Minister Sergio Etchegoyen warned that Brazil "needs to discipline" the influx of migrants.

The first day the new rule was instituted, Peru reported a more than 50% drop in the number of migrants. The two countries don't share a common border, but Peruvian authorities say more than 300,000 Venezuelans have immigrated to the country this year.

Around 1,200 Venezuelan migrants fled back over the border after the attack.

Top immigration officials from Peru, Colombia and Brazil held a meeting in the Colombian capital Bogota for a summit to discuss how to cope with the influx of refugees.

Where is Venezuela in all this?

On the occasion, Asamblea Nacional declared president of the Permanent Finance Committee, deputy Rafael Guzmán (Unity / Miranda) had said, "The AN in full made a decision to approve an agreement in rejection of the financial mechanism and alert for potential investors and actors of the cryptocurrency market, considering the issuance unconstitutional and any other obligation on the part of the Venezuelan State that has as guarantees oil reserves or any other mineral".

Venezuelan banks have been ordered to use the petro, the Maduro government-launched cryptocurrency, as a unit of account.

"Doesn't it strike you as suspicious there are photos of [these people] walking along the roadside in Peru, walking along the roadside in Ecuador, walking along the roadside in Colombia", said Diosdado Cabello, according to local media.
