Trump Reportedly Vetoed Laudatory John McCain Statement

John McCain's decades of service to his country in the hours after his death today.

Rick Davis, a former presidential campaign manager for Senator McCain who is serving as a family spokesman, read the farewell message on Monday at a press briefing in Phoenix.

"I can't trust Obama. Our thoughts, prayers and love are with Cindy and the entire McCain family".

McCain died of brain cancer on Saturday US time, aged 81.

"No, ma'am", he said.

Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that McCain will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda, a rare honor that has been given to only a dozen former senators since the tradition began in 1852, according to the Architect of the Capitol.

As AFP reported, McCain made it clear that he did not want his memorial to include the president, and Trump didn't seem to make any overtures to change his mind. "He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best".

Former Colonel Tran Trong Duyet, who ran the prison at the time, said he met Mr McCain many times while he was confined there.

"Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did", Mr Obama said. McCain, who served in the Vietnam War, spent six years as a prisoner of war. "My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can".

Pham Gia Minh, a 62-year-old businessman, said he witnessed Vietnamese civilians being killed by the U.S. bombings of North Vietnam, including the Christmas bombing of Hanoi in 1972, but he admired Mr McCain for overcoming the hard past to build better ties between the two countries.
