Ohio GOP state Sen. Troy Balderson wins US House special election

It's official, Troy Balderson of Zanesville is the victor of the Congressional special election that was held on August 7th. The final margin of victory was 1,680 votes, or 0.8 percent of the total, which falls just a few hundred votes outside the margin that would trigger an automatic recount.

The Zanesville Republican had already declared victory in the district, but uncounted provisional ballots and close polling numbers left the official results unclear for weeks.

Balderson and O'Connor will face off again November 6, competing this time for a full two-year term in Congress.

The special election was held to fill the remainder of the term of former Republican Representative Pat Tiberi, who retired from the seat in January to lead the Ohio Business Roundtable.

Young was uncooperative and was eventually ordered out of his vehicle and handcuffed to "de-escalate the situation", Lopez said. Young, who now is a free agent, averaged 7.3 points per game last season for the reigning champion Warriors.

The republican Kasich represented the district before Tiberi.

Balderson was endorsed by President Donald Trump and Ohio Governor John Kasich, and he benefited from millions in out-of-state GOP dollars.

But O'Connor was a long shot in a district that has been held by Republicans for almost 35 years and his close miss follows a number of strong Democratic performances in Republican heartlands.

Balderson's narrow win came in a district that President Trump won by 11 percentage points in 2016 and that the GOP has held since 1983.
